marks on this letter sent to president obama. we don't know. and the other important thing to point out is according to the secret service, this letter addressed to president obama has a suspicious substance in it. a suspicious substance. that's what it's being called. whereas the wicker letter, wolf, we're told tested preliminarily for ricin. preliminarily. obviously that means there will be more tests being done, we heard that from our joe johns. but certainly i think because of the temporal proximity to the boston bombings if they are connected to the boston bombings, we don't know that. we're not being told that they are, wolf. but i think because you saw the bombings on monday and now these letters coming on tuesday that that is a question that a lot of people have. there's some similarity here. and we've heard our dana bash talking about this. she certainly went through this following 9/11 with the anthrax attacks that happened. some letters of which went to capitol hill -- or one letter went to capitol hill. and there was -- that was something that happened weeks after 9/11.

mississippi. and now also a similar letter sent to the president of the united states, president obama. the letter never reached the white house. it was intercepted at an offsite screening center as all parcels, all letters sent to the president are, but once again they're investigating that initial test positive, but that's just initial. it could change. there are other letters, suspicious letters and packages also being investigated right now on capitol hill in the hart senate office building, the russell senate office building an individual walking around with a backpack delivering letters and law enforcement now questioning that individual to see if those letters do contain any suspicious powder, any suspicious material. certainly something as deadly as ricin would be a huge, huge problem. reminds a lot of us of the anthrax-laced letters that were delivered to u.s. senators, to members of the news media back at the end of 2001 shortly after 9/11 that killed some individuals, including two postal workers who just randomly touched those letters and the anthrax actually wound

investigation in washington, on letters possibly poisoned with iricin, which wer sent to president obama and senator roger wicker. eamon javers has the latest on the ricin scare. >> reporter: we've had a flurry of suspicious package incidents in washington here today. earlier today, the hallway right behind me here in the russell senate office building was actually closed off and a bomb squad moved in to investigate a suspicious package that was there. also, staffers received an e-mail alert, not to go anywhere near the third floor of the hart senate office earlier today because of a suspicious package incident over there. some members of congress reporting suspicious letters, including senator carl levin, who said that a letter was delivered to his saginaw, michigan, office. he said in a statement a minute ago that a staffer there has been sent to the hospital on a precautionary basis. that staffer hasn't developed any symptoms of ricin poisoning. and then, of course, over at the white house today, they said they had a suspicious package incident of their own as well. here's press secretary

, wolf. and they are saying that at least preliminarily a letter that was sent to president obama and received on tuesday at an offsite mail facility has tested positive for ricin. when mail goes to the white house, it doesn't actually go to the white house first. it does go to an offsite facility. this is the same case with capitol hill. keep in mind and i know our joe johns has been reminding us of this, there are people that have to process it. and obviously ricin is a very dangerous substance. so there's certainly concern there about the people who had to process this, but this was intercepted on tuesday. and the big question now is, is there a connection here between this letter, this one letter and the other letter sent to senator wicker and the bombings that happened in boston on monday? it certainly is remarkable timing and really makes you question that. jay carney, the white house press secretary was asked about this during a briefing a short time ago. and he wouldn't rule out that there was a connection. i think the reason a lot of people are asking is the bombings happened
